|Newborn Developmental Care|
In this section, you can:
Why is this Important?
The survival rate of premature and sick newborns has improved dramatically over the last 30 years. With the high rates of prematurity in Indiana and throughout the US many of these babies who survive are often left with significant physical, cognitive, social and developmental problems. The cost of caring for these babies has a tremendous economic impact on both the family and the state. Providing developmental care has significantly improved the outcome of babies born early and should be a standard of care for all Special Care Nurseries and Newborn Intensive Care Units.
Role of IPN
IPN collaborates with the Indiana Newborn Developmental Care Committee (INDCC), a grassroots multidisciplinary group of individuals that shares information about current practices, and advocates for needed practice changes in their SCN/NICU. Founded in the mid 1990's, this group improves the developmental outcome of newborns throughout Indiana and surrounding states through collaborative support, hosting regional conferences and conducting research.
